Congratulations to the Lions who won promotion to the Championship this afternoon with a 1-0 victory in the League One playoff final over Swindon. I was lucky enough to be there at Wembley for the game and, though I might be a tiny bit biased, I thought it was a well-deserved win.

There are various arty goings-on at the moment in Deptford with the annual Deptford X festival.

I was over there at the weekend and had a hard time finding the venues (top tip: check where they are on the map before leaving home). In fact, I found it so difficult to find them that I had to stop off for an emergency pub lunch before continuing. Several large roast potatoes, two good hours and a game of Trivial Pursuit later (a pub with board games, no less!), the treasure hunt continued. At last, when all hope seemed lost, we came across some suitably quirky installations next to the railway carriage cafe thingumajig that is The Deptford Project.

I won’t spoil the surprise by telling you what we saw. If you want to support a bit of much-needed local creativity, go there. Eat some cake in the cafe. And have a nose at the art.

The festival is on until next weekend, I believe, so don’t wait too long!

Having recently moved closer to Canada Water, I’ve been exploring my new patch with fresh eyes lately. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with what I’ve found.

If you live in the area and haven’t done so yet, take a few hours some time to pay a visit to the park area bordered by Salter Road. There’s a very pleasant walk through corridors of greenery, the rather unexpected Stave Hill and even an ‘eco park’. I for one had no idea it was there before! Makes me wonder what other hidden gems are around…

Happy New Year! This photo shows the creepy aftermath of New Year’s Eve in the Surrey Quays shopping centre car park — abandoned trolleys everywhere. Somehow I found it rather spooky.

I just came across an excellent site that is the home of the “Canada Water Campaign”: http://www.canadawater.org/, a group that “seeks to involve local residents in the physical, social and economic development of the Canada Water area.”

The site has details of all the new developments that are underway and planned for the Canada Water area. If you live in the area but haven’t seen what’s coming or would like more information about the group, then do take a look.

Incidentally, apparently ten of the houses in the new Maple Quays development have been snapped up already. More are available off-plan from £249,995 for one-bedroom flats or £319,500 for two bedroom flats. At least that’s how much they were going for last month.
